Ville Valo este o specie de star rock pe cale de dispariție. Probabil ultima mare figură „cult” a erei metal contemporane, artistul cu al său timbru baritonal absolut unic și-a confecționat un personaj scenic original care combină cu naturalețe melancoliile delicate ale eroului romantic cu predilecțiile întunecate ale poetului damnat. Alături de formația finlandeză HIM, a creat un gen de metal cu un sound recognoscibil încă de la primele note: vestitul și controversatul love-metal de care atâția melomani s-au îndrăgostit iremediabil și pe care cel puțin la fel de mulți l-au urât visceral. În cariera sa de peste 20 de ani, HIM nu a lăsat fanii metal indiferenți și s-a aflat întotdeauna în centrul atenției presei de specialitate.
Totul până în 2017, când trupa a anunțat că își încheie activitatea. Vestea a venit de nicăieri, mai ales că HIM confirmase în 2015 că are planuri să înregistreze un nou disc. Muzicienii nu au dat explicații suplimentare pentru a-și justifica alegerea, dar potrivit spuselor acestora, decizia de a renunța la scenă a fost unanimă și nu a fost motivată de patimă sau de vreo dramă. S-a petrecut natural și amiabil pentru că artiștii au simțit că au ajuns la capăt de drum cu HIM. Astfel, în afară de colaborarea lui Ville Valo cu proiectul Agents (un schlager band finlandez), care s-a materializat în 2019 într-un album intitulat modest „Ville Valo and Agents”, peste lumea Majestății Sale Infernale s-a așternut o liniște sepulcrală.
În 20 martie anul acesta, în plină „apocalipsă”, fără ca vreo premoniție să îi bântuie pe fani, solistul a lansat un EP cu trei piese nou-nouțe, numit „Gothica Fennica Vol. I”, nu sub labelul HIM, ci ca un proiect solo semnat VV. Și așa, carantina a devenit un pic mai suportabilă. Spre bucuria celor care iubesc love-metalul, sound-ul cântecelor este unul familiar și deși materialul nu este unul His Infernal Majesty, ar putea prea bine să fie. Ville Valo a fost întotdeauna „omul bun la toate” în formație – compozitor, textier și multi-instrumentist – așa că nu este de mirare că opera sa independentă este asemănătoare – dacă nu chiar identică – cu cea a trupei. Până la urmă să o spunem pe șleau, Ville Valo a fost (și este), de fapt, HIM.
Chiar dacă stilul este unul cunoscut, se simte o mai mare libertate în materie de compoziție și versuri. Pentru că nu mai este condiționat de așteptările oamenilor de la HIM, care s-a străduit să aibă un sound unic de la un album la altul, chiar dacă a păstrat constantele genului, Valo și-a regăsit naturalețea și autenticitatea. EP-ul este o colecție intimă de balade gotice care se remarcă prin combinația reușită între melodicitate și metal, cocktail care a caracterizat întotdeauna creațiile artistului. Melodiile sunt pline de hook-uri grandioase și refrene care îți rămân întipărite în minte, dar nu renunță la acea „întunecare” aparte care reiese din versurile criptice, pline de referințe din sfera misticismului. În mod iscusit, cu acel blend unic între blândețe și duritate, sinceritate și secret, Valo cântă povești pline de vrajă despre eternele mistere ale iubirii. Și o face descătușat de orice fel de așteptări străine care veneau la pachet cu eticheta „HIM”.
Fără ieșiri în presă, fără promovare în afara conturilor de social media ale artistului, fără niciun fel de tam-tam, „Gothica Fennica Vol. I” pare a fi rezultatul unei munci 100% sincere. Este muzică de dragul muzicii și nimic altceva. EP-ul nu are altă „agendă” decât aceea de a expune lumii un crâmpei din sufletul lui Valo, rămas fidel genului care l-a consacrat. Va urma un volum II? Momentan nu se știe absolut nimic. Putem să ne bazăm doar pe promisiunea subtilă făcută de formularea titlului primului EP.
Până când vom afla mai multe despre viitorul preocupărilor muzicale ale solistului, ne vom încălzi sufletele cu piese precum „Salute the Sanguine”, „Run Away from the Sun” și „Saturnine Saturnalia” care dovedesc că spiritul love-metal este viu și puternic. Au existat voci care au susținut că melodiile au rămas în plus, ca un soi de B-sides, de pe vremea ultimului album al trupei, „Tears On Tape”, dar acestea sunt prea solide componistic și unitare din punct de vedere stilistic și ca atmosferă pentru a fi simple bonus track-uri uitate într-un sertar. Așa că prefer să îmi ascult gut-feeling-ul și să susțin că sunt, pur și simplu, cântece noi, compuse relativ recent.
„Gothica Fennica Vol. I” este, înainte de toate, o promisiune frumoasă făcută fanilor de unul dintre cei mai iubiți artiști metal, de a cărui activitate muzicală mi-a fost foarte dor. Mie și legiunilor întregi de admiratori ai acestuia. Poate că, odată cu trecerea timpului și cu depășirea exceselor care și-au pus amprenta asupra lui, Ville Valo va reuși să facă din nou din arta sa un loc de refugiu – și nu unul de tulburare – pe care va vrea să îl „împartă” cu noi. Până atunci, așteptăm volumul al doilea din „Gothica Fennica”.
Ville Valo is a rare breed of rockstar. As probably the last great cult figure in contemporary metal, the musician created an absolutely unique stage persona that partakes in both the delicate melancholia of the romantic hero, and the dark propensities of the damned poet. Let’s face it. The man is a Gothic prince. As for his exquisite voice, I dare you to find another lead singer with such a powerful and expressive baritone.
Together with his band HIM, he crafted a genre with a perfectly recognizable sound, cunningly called “love metal”, which quickly amassed a huge and devoted fan-base. Sure, critics weren’t hard to find and many scowled at the bittersweet, soaring melodies, the darkly romantic lyrics and the hit-quality of the songs, but you can’t please everyone, and for each unhappy hateful trv metalhead, there were dozens of „heartagramers” ready to stand up for the band. All in all, in a career spanning well over 20 years, HIM was never faced with indifference and managed to remain the talk of the rock town consistently.
Until 2017, that is, when the Finnish group abruptly announced that it was calling it quits and disbanding. The news came as a shock to fans who were expecting a new record, which had been discussed in 2015, and definitely not a split-up. There were no extra-explanations, and no drama. The musicians had had enough and they felt like they had said everything they wanted to say. It was the end of an era for those of us who grew up with HIM. For the longest time, aside from Ville Valo’s collaboration with the schlager-band Agents, there was no news from the love-metal front. The album humbly titled “Ville Valo and Agents” came out in 2019 with a collection of all-Finnish songs that were cool, but had nothing in common with the artist’s past endeavors. It seemed like the end of it all.
But, on March 20th, 2020, while the world was reeling under the devastation caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, and words like “apocalypse” were on everyone’s mind, social media surprised us with an unexpected gift: the release of a solo EP, called “Gothica Fennica Vol. I” signed VV, a.k.a. Ville Valo. The fans were thrilled to discover three love-metal sonic gems on the record and proceeded to bask in their familiar bittersweet darkness. While this is definitely not a HIM album, why lie? It might as well be. But this is only because as we all know, at the end of the day Ville Valo is HIM. From the start, he wrote all the songs and lyrics, and even played some of the instrumental bits himself.
Even if this is love-metal, one can’t help but feel a greater ease and freedom in terms of songwriting. Now that Valo isn’t held back by people’s expectations of what HIM should be or sound like, he rediscovered his love of soaring vocals, grandiose melodies and mysterious love stories. As he no longer needs to obey the self-made matrix established with His Infernal Majesty, he’s free to be fully himself, and where he shines the most is in the Gothic ballad. “Gothica Fennica” is an intimate collection of such creations, which take their lifeblood from the ever so masterful combination between melody and metal. The new songs are chock full of majestic hooks and choruses so grandiose, they remain etched in one’s memory from the very first listen. One thing that isn’t used sparingly is that particular brand of seductive darkness that oozes from the cryptic lyrics, replete with mystical references. Ville Valo never really stopped seeking the meaning behind love’s eternal mysteries, you see. And it’s obvious in songs like “Salute the Sanguine”, “Run Away from the Sun” and “Saturnine Saturnalia”.
Strange regarding the release of “Gothica Fennica Vol. I” is its utter lack of oomph. There were no new promo materials, no interviews or press appearances, and no publicity whatsoever. While no one really knows the reason behind such humbleness, what it says about the record itself is that it was born out of sheer love for the craft, and nothing else. There were no expectations or agendas. It appears that all that Valo genuinely wanted was to give his fans a reason to be happy, by doing what he does best: exposing bits and pieces of his soul, through his wonderful music.
Is there going to be a volume II, like the title promises with its volume I reference? This is something only time will tell. Until then, we’re just glad that love metal is alive and well somewhere out there. A few voices did claim that, considering some similarities between the new tracks and those off of HIM’s last album, “Tears On Tape”, the EP is actually just a compilation of unreleased tunes. However, the songwriting and style are much too fresh for the songs to be some B-sides that Valo took out of an old drawer. I’ll choose to go with my gut feeling and believe that “Gothica Fennica” is a recent accomplishment.
Above anything else, the EP is a beautiful promise of things to come, made to his fans by one of metal’s most beloved Gothic heroes. Perhaps, as time wove its magic and granted our prince some well-earned peace, he managed to rediscover music for himself as what it was always supposed to be, a haven, and not a place of torture and unrest. And if he’d like to share his art with his fans again, even better! We can’t wait for the next chapter in VVs sonic story.
